Today we are going to learn why, what, and how, to read more!
At certain times in my life, there have been periods of 2 or 3 days when I haven’t read at all because I was coming home late and tired. When I eventually got back to reading a book, an excellent blog, or anything related to my business, it made me feel like I had spent the last few days in vain.
I want to remind you of some of the benefits of reading. The chances are that you already know of these benefits, but perhaps you wonder how they can improve your productivity.
Your brain is a muscle. Your brain requires exercise to make it more powerful. By reading, you are putting your mind to thinking about what’s in the book, and trying to figure out what’s coming in the next chapter and how you can apply it in your life.
By reading, you forget your day to day problems in life. If you are absorbed in good content, if you are reading about a subject you are interested in, you simply forget about your work problems and other stress you may have.
I’m sure you are not surprised by this one 🙂 Reading gives you new experiences and skills. By having more knowledge, you will be able to face challenges more easily.
Stronger analytical skills
After you read about how Elon Musk has turned a problem into an opportunity, when you next face a problem, you will analyze it differently.
Improved focus and concentration
When you read, you are focused on what you are reading, and with this training you will find it easier to concentrate on your work.
Your imagination will grow
By reading, your brain is put to work, imagining all the things that you read about . It’s far more interesting and involving to read a book than watch a movie. When you see the movie of a book you have already read, you realize that your imagination is far more powerful than you thought.
Now, let’s see what we should be reading.
I have three criteria I use when I am searching for books, blogs, or anything else to read.
I usually like to listen to inspirational audiobooks. For example, books about the life of someone who inspires you – biographies, and autobiographies. I have audiobooks about Richard Branson, Nelson Mandela, Elon Musk and many other people I admire. They inspire me to do more, to think differently.
These books provide help in learning about subjects you are interested in. How to raise more money, how to be a better leader, how to do better marketing. These books will make you better at something.
These are books about health, philosophy, history, art. These books are good to read to increase your knowledge about subjects you find of interest.
How to read more
Sleep with a book and wake up with a book. It’s a good way to reduce your stress before you sleep, and is a good way to start the day.
The Kindle app is on my phone, so when I am waiting around for something, I open the app, and start to read. Even if is only for a few minutes, it make me feel better.
When you are walking the dog, or just taking a walk in the park, and listening to a great audiobook narrated by Sir Richard Branson, you will have that feeling you are having a conversation with the author himself. I love to listen to audiobooks while commuting.
Some members of our team can read while exercising, while others enjoy audiobooks while exercising.
There are some things, though, that can’t be learned from books, such as intuition, instinct, and common sense. These things need practice and can’t be learned from a book!
